Backbends

 Backbends

Why is it that some people are just natural backbenders and Urdhva Dhanurasana looks like a piece of cake? You simply flip up like a dome and yet for others of us Urdhva Dhanurasana is a great challenge?

Urdhva Dhanurasana as a backbend is really the backbend that begins to open up new dimensions of practice. So Urdhva Dhanurasana is very much a keynote posture and there are so many wonderful ways into that posture that the journey itself as we all know is the point, being on the journey is the point and not needing to get anywhere but having a simple posture in mind as we practice. And we find all of the component parts that help us to work on that journey towards this posture.

So first of all we can look at the classifications of backbends and the levers that we use within the backbends. So I need to in this introduction probably go back to the beginning and introduce how I’m going to structure the article looking at the physics and the structure of the arch and looking at what restricts us and inhibits us.

Backbends

BackbendsSome of us have muscles on the front of the body that want to stay contracted and take a lot of coaxing, easing and encouragement to psychologically let go. We know that the muscles that contract are switched on by the nervous system, but the muscles that release (antagonists) aren’t following any nerve impulse, they’re simply letting go within the pair-work that goes on in the muscular system to affect movement. So letting go of the abdominal area in preparation.. Supta Baddokonasana can work really well with this on the bolsters where the lower abdomen and the upper abdomen can just have a really passive time when the mind can let go, when the mind takes the awareness to the abdominal cavity and lets go. Then the ilio-psoas muscles which we spend so much time dedicating study towards, these muscles that are major big long hip flexor muscles, take a great deal of encouragement to let go. We find this in practice of the splits (Hanumanasana) and we also need to address it for Urdhva Dhanurasana. Then again with most of us in the way that we’ve been living since the late 90s with continual forward bending over computer screens, stiffness of the shoulders is another area to tackle. So if we start classifying all of our familiar backbending postures then we can start substituting backbends and this is particularly helpful when planning lessons and theming lesson plans for a course.

The neck and shoulders also need some systematic release and Pawanmuktasana and postures that lead to that softening of the shoulders. This is being explored to help teachers assist their students to work towards not only to somehow help teachers to explore their own practice but also for teachers to draw their own students towards this pinnacle posture. Urdhva Dhanurasana requires….is architectural ..like any archway supported by the columns, columns need to be firmly planted and the arch really needs to be…maybe I could even bring in tensegrity, this idea of tensegrity within the arch of Urdhva Dhanurasana.

I attended my first yoga class in 1974. However, it was not until I became pregnant with my first child while working as a nurse in Asia that I realised the transformative potential within Yoga. I gained enormous benefit from my practice at this time which gave me the confidence to go on to have my second child at home, and to become a midwife.

I trained initially in South India at the Sivananda Vedanta Ashram in Kerala. I subsequently went on to train for a further 2 years with Janet Balaskas, Lolly Stirk and Yvonne Moore at the Active Birth Centre in London. It was at this time that I came to understand how a more intuitive approach to Yoga, based on the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli, could allow something more beautiful to evolve in my practice.

Judy Cameron

I gained my Diploma in Teaching Yoga with the British Wheel of Yoga in the late 1990’s and have also completed a Diploma in Baby Yoga with Birthlight, and Yoga for the Special Child at the Special Yoga Centre in London. I am a qualified midwife and have a strong interest in the use of hypnosis in childbirth and teach HypnoBirthing and Hypnosis for Childbirth.

Judy CameronI teach a mixture of classes in the Scottish Highlands. My classes include Active Yoga, Mindful Yoga, Mixed Ability, Chair Based, Pregnancy, Postnatal Mother and Baby, and Special Yoga for Children. I also offer Couples Birth Preparation workshops, and HypnoBirthing on a private one-to-one basis. As Director of the YogaBirth Teacher Training and Tutor for both the BWY Pregnancy Module and the Postnatal Module, I have a deep interest in passing on my knowledge to other teachers. I also work as a Hatha Tutor on the Yoga Scotland Teacher Training Diploma in Edinburgh.

My current teachers are Diane Long, Sandra Sabatini and Christine Borg.

A workshop for Teachers by Jacqueline Purnell in SurreyYou already know everything you need about backbending.’ said Jacqui, ‘Today will be about enhancement.’ She went on to explain that Upward Bow/Wheel/Chakrasana is a Gateway posture & can open up a new dimension of backbending. Days Consisting of Continuous Professional Development in London.

Inspiring and Creating a variety of New Days for 2017 and beyond

One area of work Jacqueline Purnell Yoga Alliance ERYT 500 orchestrates and loves is encouraging experts in their fields to create new and exciting days to be aired first in Central London.

Event management is a passion for Jacqueline, from the first stages all the way through to delivery.

Inspiring and Creating a variety of New Days for 2017 and beyondHere is a short synopsis Jacqueline coaxed from one of her expert teachers:

"We will look at the engineering of the lumbar spine, both in terms of physical structure and also the mechanism of control of stability in this necessarily unstable area of the body. We will explore the implications of this understanding in the practice of yoga asana, considering aspects of safety and the differences between individuals. Shoulders are a complex area of the body and have a large emotional and expressive component in the way they are organised in each of us. We will explore how this impacts yoga teaching and the language we use for instruction-giving, in the afternoon. "

Date: Saturday 23 July 2016, 1000 till 1600

It was fine weather & The Light Centre is a short distance from Moorgate Underground & relatively easy to find, as many nearby their buildings have their numbers on the door. The Light Centre is modern, clean & very attractive. A receptionist was on duty & we found the room easily because it was signposted & labeled. There was a kettle & a great range of teas & nice biscuits & so forth. Yoga mats, bolsters & blocks in tasteful colours abounded in every room!

Anthony Grover, who is also national treasurer of BWY, introduced our instructor, Jacqueline Purnell, who at once demonstrated a friendly, pleasant & well-informed teaching style. Her awareness of anatomy & physiology was impressive, but she created an atmosphere in which we felt very comfortable & got us sharing our own experience.

Location

Yoga Shala Ibiza is held in an eco-friendly yoga center, The Garden Of Joy and is set in fabulous natural surroundings just outside Santa Eulalia and only 15 minutes drive from Ibiza town. It is just five minutes from a pebble beach and ten minutes from a shallow sandy bay and has beautiful views of the nearby "Magic Mountain" and the sea. It also has an outside shaded yoga platform and a swimming pool and as there is very little light pollution our stars twinkle very brightly.

Things to do

Although the focus is on health, while you are in Ibiza you can take the opportunity to experience aquatic sports, such as sub-aqua diving, in the beautiful clear sea, as well as, hiking and horse riding. There is also access to Reiki healing, massages, deep tissue work and acupressure. These activities are all available at extra cost.

Accommodation

Accommodation is just 10 to 15 minutes walk from the center and close to a beach. The apartment accommodates two people sharing one-bedroom, with twin beds and its own sitting room and kitchen. The apartment block has a cafe and pool and there are restaurants and a supermarket near by.

Food

Breakfast, and herbal teas.

We want to support our local farmers and their traditional lifestyle, and hope to form an ecological community with our neighbors. Local farmers have been farming here for generations and still farm by hand. The mountainous interior of the island is a quilt of dense pine forest and olive and almond groves. Farmers use ancient terracing to cultivate their crops and irrigation techniques introduced by the Arabs over 1,000 years ago.
